While the Edinburgh Fringe is the undisputed king of arts festivals, on the far side of the world the Australian city of Adelaide is home to its sister festival, The Adelaide Fringe, proudly the southern hemisphere’s largest arts festival.

I’ve been lucky enough to live in both Edinburgh and Adelaide, and have deliriously immersed myself in both festivals. While alike, there are some significant differences.

One thing I did not expect to discover when I set out on the European Bazaar project was just how many festivals there are out there that people would call bizarre. Even after over a year of researching and six months trekking back and forth across the continent, I’m still having people regale me with events, ceremonies or competitions that :  1) test my credulity and 2) I struggle to believe I’m yet to hear about.

If there’s been a common theme thus far with the Spanish festivals of European Bazaar, it has been the definite need of earplugs.

In March, at Valencia’s Las Fallas, it was the likelihood of having your eardrums popped like bubblegum by your close proximity to any one of a million fireworks. At the Mallorcan festival of Es Firo it’s probably going to be because there is a man dressed as a pirate and he appears to have bought his own shotgun to the festival…BOOM…

And that is only the beginning of the craziness.
